First Tee’s new putting league, “Race to the Ridges”, is off to a great start!
March 13th, 2023
An exciting new junior golf experience is underway. First Tee participants gathered for the first of 7 events in the regular season of Race to the Ridges on Monday, March 13th. We believe valuable lessons can be learned through the game of golf and believe this “miniature” version to be no exception! Our vision is for this league to be an entry-point for new participants and a wonderful opportunity for our existing participants to come together with new friends in friendly competition. If you’ve been wanting your child to become involved in junior golf, this is an excellent place to start!

Our trained coaches empower and inspire kids and teens while teaching them about managing emotions, setting goals, resolving conflicts, and more.
Make this a summer to remember and give your children an experience that lasts a lifetime!
The 2022 First Tee Invitational will be held on Monday, October 10. We are excited to announce that once again golfers will get to choose between playing at Farmington or Birdwood. We will email past participants to announce when registration is open.
First Tee — Virginia Blue Ridge’s Program Director, Andrew Good, and Board Member, Wade Tremblay, were featured on the local “Neighborhood Law Center” show. The host of that show, Melvin Burruss, is a local attorney and friend of FTVBR. Wade and Andrew sat down with him and did a great job of sharing some of our story. Watch the video below to learn about the history of our chapter and the efforts we are making to use golf as a conduit for positively impacting kids all over the Charlottesville area.
Scotland is known as the birthplace of the sport of golf. “The Royal and Ancient” at St. Andrew’s is where it all began. While it might feel like women have only been part of the sport in recent history, the game’s origins in Scotland centered around a female player who was rather well known– Mary Queen of Scots! It was the queen who commissioned the course after discovering a similar game during a trip to France. The term “caddie” comes from Mary Stuart’s nickname for her on-course assistants who were formally called “cadets.” The athletic queen helped popularize the sport in the mid-1500’s.
Unfortunately, it took almost 400 years for the world to catch up to what Mary Queen of Scots knew from the beginning — that women belonged on the golf course alongside of men. The LPGA was formed in 1952 and women like Babe Didrickson-Zaharias, Nancy Lopez, Karrie Webb, and Annika Sorenstam have been making history ever since.

We believe every kid deserves the chance to build inner strength before the world demands it, to find the joy that comes with feeling confident in their own skin before the world makes it feel impossible, and to access experiences and spaces where personal growth happens. We exist to enable kids to build the strength of character that empowers them through a lifetime of newchallenges.
Our kids and teens are facing challenges unseen by previous generations. Many lack access to safe opportunities that foster a culture of acceptance and provide mentorship. They live in a world where social pressures are always on, calm and confidence are hard to access and perseverance is a required superpower every day. Young people are growing in new environments that are demanding more from them, and therefore more from us. We’ve been building game changers for five years. We hope you’ll join us during our year-long celebration of this milestone! Stay tuned for more details.
